Aren't you all hyped up for our Graduation Night!

We've got very IMPT some updates and news for you to note:

Firstly, those who'd like to perform on Graduation Night, please contact Martha Ching with the necessary details (type of performance, length, necessary logistics) ASAP

ALSO, PLEASE
1. Send in your Class videos
2. Compile and send in your Class Photos
3. We sincerely ask you to send in any and EVERY photo of you and your friends spanning your 4 years in St Nicks'. The pictures will be used for a Video montage

4. Bring $1 on Thursday when we meet in school. The money will be going to:

- Our Gift to the school

- Other materials for use during Graduation Night

5. We would like to invite your parents/siblings/friends to share in the moment of your graduation as well, so please approach Ms Law if you would like to book more seats as we need to fill as many tables as we can.

6. Each Class is given 3 mins for the walk-in. On Thursday, classes will draw lots on the musical and song that is to be used for their own walk-in, class by class.

After Thursday when the play for each class is decided, pls decide what your class is going to do in that 3 mins during walk-in. (eg, you plan to walk slowly/ jazz hands/ wear cats hats etc)

For those who watched The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, you guys should know this song pretty well :) It was featured at the ending of the movie, when the four had to go back to their world and leave Narnia.
The title's 'The Call' by Regina Spektor - a really inspirational singer whom I think despite not being really a big name, sings about life and the feelings of everyone. The fact that she writes her own songs just add on to how awesome she is (okay I'm biased) but yep!
I hope that everyone can enjoy this song as much as I do, and perhaps listen to more of her songs. :D

I'm going to introduce to everyone an inspirational song by my wonderful idol, S.H.E :D I'm pretty sure many of you have at least heard of them right.....? LOL okay nvm. (:

This song is called 魔力, and in English, it means some kind of magical strength. I thought of the stress that our Sec 4 seniors might be facing now, and sometimes, they might even break down. I thus decided to put this music video, because I want them to think about certain people in their lives that will help them through. In the song, there's a line that goes like this: "你是我的魔力，想要勇敢就想你" I want the seniors to think of someone special, where it can be their courage to face the stress and coming 'O' levels. Regardless of whoever. Their best friends, family and so on. (:

They can also dedicate this song to whoever they feel is special to them. Someone that gives them moral strength, someone who boosts their courage. In this hectic period of time, they really need lots and lots of moral support. (:

Tourists back testimony

Filipino Alberto Lubang, the bus driver who survived the Aug 23 hostage crisis in Manila, takes an oath before giving testimony during a hearing at the Department of Justice in Manila.

MANILA - HONG Kong tourists who survived a bus hijacking in the Philippines have corroborated testimony by the driver that their captor shot the victims at close range, a top official said on Monday.

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, head of the government inquiry into the Aug 23 hostage-taking which left eight tourists dead, said five survivors had given statements to Philippine police sent to Hong Kong last week.

'The account of the survivors tends to corroborate the material points, the accounts of the driver Lubang. Meaning (the victims were shot at) close range with an M-16 rifle,' Ms de Lima told reporters.

Bus driver Alberto Lubang told the inquiry last week that, while he was handcuffed to the steering wheel, he saw in the rear view mirror the hostage-taker shoot the victims one by one. Mr Lubang said he used a nail file to unpick the handcuffs and then jumped out the window shortly before police commandos launched a bungled rescue operation.

Ms De Lima said that, based on the survivors' accounts, at least two of those who died tried to fight off the gunman but were overpowered. 'One tried to grab the muzzle of the gun, but was killed. Another one charged the hostage taker, but was also shot,' she said.

'It would appear from the survivors' account that the shooting by Mendoza happened before the assault, that is what is emerging now.' The statement appears to be a reversal of a statement Ms de Lima made last week, when she claimed that it could not be ruled out that 'friendly fire' from rescuing police officers may have also hit the hostages. Ms De Lima on Monday said further ballistics tests were being carried out, although she said Hong Kong investigators indicated that the fatal gunshots came from inside the bus. -- AFP

LOS ANGELES - LADY Gaga said the controversial 'meat' dress she wore at the MTV Video Music Awards was intended to make a statement.

Winning eight prizes at Sunday's ceremony, the glam pop performance artist chose to accept one of her statuettes wearing nothing but a raw, red meat dress with a matching purse, that became one of the most talked about moments of the televised show.

'If we don't stand up for what we believe in and if we don't fight for our rights, pretty soon we're going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones,' Lady Gaga, 24, told talk show host Ellen DeGeneres on her TV program broadcast on Monday. 'And, I am not a piece of meat,' she added.

Sunday's outfit comes on the heels of a meat bikini Gaga donned for the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan's September issue. It was one of several different costumes the singer wore on Sunday, including one that looked like a large black trash bag.

Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said that 'wearing a dress made from cuts of dead cows is offensive enough to bring comment.'

Korean Pop Night Concert 2010 in Singapore

Have you all heard?

SNSD, Big Bang, F.T Island, SHINee, INFINITE and D-NA are coming to Singapore! The news that the Korean Pop Night Concert 2010 is confirmed was revealed by a local concert organizer, Proof Label, and the event will be happening this October 23rd in the Singapore Expo! Did anyone get tickets?

Talking about getting tickets, did you hear about the K-pop ‘Fandemonium’ at the Orchard Mall?

A legion of K-pop fans queued up for Korean Pop Night Concert 2010 tickets at the Orchard Mall a few nights before the day of the sales of tickets. The collective body of fans surged for the door, and one individual even fainted from the pressure. Thankfully, she was brought inside the mall to recuperate. Another fan experienced breathing difficulties, but refused to leave the location for medical treatment.

A fan said, “I was somewhere near the front, and when the fans behind pushed, I had to use every ounce of strength to make sure I was not crushed against the barrier.”

At least it was worth it for those fans who managed to purchase tickets. I’m sure that there are a number of St Nicks girls that are hard-core fans of SNSD, Big Bang, F.T Island, SHINee, INFINITE and D-NA, so did you all manage to get tickets?

Weight Loss Plan

A man calls a company and orders their 5-day, 10 lb. weight loss program.

The next day, there's a knock on the door and there stands before him a voluptuous, athletic, 19 year old babe dressed in nothing but a pair of Nike running shoes and a sign around her neck.

She introduces herself as a representative of the weight loss company.

The sign reads, "If you can catch me, you can have me."

Without a second thought, he takes off after her.

A few miles later huffing and puffing, he finally gives up.

The same girl shows up for the next four days and the same thing happens.

On the fifth day, he weighs himself and is delighted to find he has lost 10 lbs. as promised.

He calls the company and orders their 5-day/20 pound program.

The next day there's a knock at the door and there stands the most stunning and beautiful woman he has ever seen in his life.

She is wearing nothing but Reebok running shoes and a sign around her neck that reads, "If you catch me you can have me."

Well, he's out the door after her like a shot.

This girl is in excellent shape and he does his best, but no such luck.

So for the next four days, the same routine happens with him gradually getting in better and better shape.

Much to his delight on the fifth day when he weighs himself, he discovers that he has lost another 20 lbs. as promised.

He decides to go for broke and calls the company to order the 7-day/50 pound program.

"Are you sure?" asks the representative on the phone. "This is our most rigorous program."

"Absolutely," he replies, "I haven't felt this good in years."

The next day there's a knock at the door; and when he opens it he finds a huge muscular guy standing there wearing nothing but pink running shoes and a sign around his neck that reads,"If I catch you, you are mine!!!"

He lost 63 pounds that week.

A Mother’s Love (an inspirational story)

A little boy came up to his mother in the kitchen one evening while she was fixing supper, and handed her a piece of paper that he had been writing on. After his Mom dried her hands on an apron, she read it, and this is what it said:

• Be a giver not an asker, especially with your parents. There is a lot to give, besides money. That is, LOVE.

She thinks she has five more minutes to ride her bike. The truth is, I get Five more minutes to watch her play.”

So once he's unpacked and settled down in the hotel, he sends an email to his wife. What he did not count on was mistyping the email and it got sent to a widow who had just returned from her husband's funeral. When she read the email, she fainted. This is what it said:

SMRT will display 4,500 flags islandwide to celebrate National Day

SINGAPORE: SMRT will fly 4,500 flags across the island to celebrate Singapore’s 45th birthday on National Day, getting into the act of fulfilling the theme of this year’s National Day Parade —"Live Our Dreams, Fly Our Flag".

This year, the public transport operator is joining NDP organisers to celebrate National Day by displaying flags at some 100 locations at all its offices, train stations, bus interchanges, as well as on SMRT taxis and buses and staff private vehicles.

Col Benedict Lim, chairman of the NDP 2010 Executive Committee, says: "We want to get the people into their celebratory mood. It’s important, and we’d like to urge all Singaporeans to fly our flag at our homes, outside of the car, in our hands and most importantly, in our hearts."

Singaporeans can look forward to getting into the spirit of NDP 2010 when all SMRT train stations, bus interchanges and Xchanges start playing the NDP 2010 theme song, "Song for Singapore" by Corrinne May.

And at 8.10 pm on August 9, SMRT will rally Singaporeans to participate in One Voice 2010, to recite the national pledge and sing the national anthem at all its train stations, buses interchanges and four Xchanges shopping areas.

SMRT is supporting NDP 2010 with close to 500,000 dollars worth of sponsorship.

The shirts will be delivered on Wednesday, 11th August as the supplier is only able to deliver them after 2pm on 6th August (Nat Day Celebration) which, by then we will all be dismissed, so it's not an option. Yes, i know it's unfortunate that we cannot get it by National Day, but it's okay, we will be able to take a cohort picture another day!

Hey Greens!

After many councillors & friends (thank you!) helped to collate the votes for the designs, we found that Majority of the votes went to design 5, followed by design 6. Most of the votes for design 5 also came with a request (did you all have telepathy or something) to use design 6's back. Therefore, we've reproduced a a hybrid design!

So check out our cohort tee design. Embrace it, love it!

Thank you to ALL of our designers once again for taking the effort and initiative to design your ideal tee! They are all really nice and i've heard a lot of good comments about every one. Honestly. So thank you Hillary, Jean, Mandi, Marie, Si Min and Zhao Yi! (Alphabetical order)

Please also bring $8 to school on Friday. It is definitely going to cost lower than $8, but we're in the midst of finding the cheapest supplier so we don't have a specific quotation yet. And the extra money can always be used to buy recess, or.. donated to the grad night fund!! (PS. if each person in the cohort donates $0.50 to the fund, it amounts to a lot: $182 (WOW! :O)! And the psg, teachers, council exco will have more resources to make it a great one for you guys) :)

Hey Greens!

I'm here to announce the result: We are having a Green T-Shirt! Actually, green won by a huge percentage (77.1% [3 s.f.]). Although green may be a difficult colour, it's able to Scream "WE ARE THE GREEN BADGE" everywhere we go, without us even trying, so it's really good that its got our identity and spirit written all over it! :D

Now, we move on to vote for the designs. Our very own designers put in a lot of hard work into it, so please give them your support and positive comments (No negative please)! Spaniards make €38k transfer bid for psychic octopus Paul

"The octopus has wowed the world with his run of correct World Cup predictions, including his tip that Spain would beat Holland in last night's World Cup final.

Now, Spanish businessmen are launching an audacious bid to bring the octopus to Spain and rename him Paulo, using him as a mascot at a major food event.

Paul's psychic powers have not gone down well with everyone though, with fans of Holland, Germany and Argentina issuing a string of death threats towards the eight-legged creature.

Many have posted recipes online, with the Berliner Kurier newspaper urging the aquarium to "throw him in the frying pan", following his correct prediction that Spain would beat Germany in the World Cup semi-final.

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has told a Spanish radio station he was worried about the octopus' safety and is considering offering the octopus Spanish security.

He said: "I am concerned for the octopus ... I am thinking of sending him a protective team."

Spain's Environment and Fisheries Minister Elena Espinosa went one step further:

"On Monday, I shall be at the European Council of Ministers and I shall be asking for a (fishing) ban on Paul the octopus so the Germans do not eat him" she said."

WOODEN BOWLS

A frail old man lived with his son, his daughter-in-law, and his four-year-old grandson. His eyes were blurry, his hands trembled, and his step faltered.

The family would eat together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating rather difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon, drooping to the floor. When he grasped his glass of milk, it often spilled clumsily at the tablecloth.

With this happening almost every night, the son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess.

"We must do something about grandfather," said the son.

"I've had enough of his milk spilling, noisy eating and food on the floor," the daughter-in-law agreed.

So the couple set a small table at the corner.

There, grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed their dinner at the dinner table. Since grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in wooden bowls. Sometimes when the family glanced in grandfather's direction, he had a tear in his eye as he ate alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food. The four-year-old watched it all in silence.

One evening, before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly: "What are you making?" Just as sweetly, the boy replied, "Oh, I'm making a little bowl for you and mama to eat your food from when I grow up." The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.

These words so struck the parents that they were speechless. Then tears streamed down their cheeks. Though no words were spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening, the husband took grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table.

For the remainder of his days, grandfather ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk was spilled or the table cloth was soiled.

South Koreans Revolutionize iPhone Market with Sausage Meat Stylus

As of March 20, 2010, winter is officially over for the northern hemisphere, but have we learned anything at all from it? Southern Korean iPhone users certainly have: when it’s too cold to operate your iPhone with your fingers, use a Korean sausage meat stylus instead!

Winter is a chilly season in South Korea. Average January temperatures in Seoul, South Korea, typically range somewhere between 16°F and 21°F, although they have in the past plunged as low as -7°F. (Korean History Project).

And as any survivor of winter knows, cold weather typically renders one’s fingers rather numb, thereby making it awfully difficult to handle small devices, let alone operate an iPhone.

The tech-savvy citizens of South Korea have decided to combat this pesky situation by turning ‘Maxbong’ sausage finger snacks from CJ Corporation into inexpensive meat styluses.

According to Engadget, the sausages are “electrostatically compatible with the iPhone’s capacitive touchscreen.” This means that you can use the sausage to dial calls, launch apps, and even write lengthy text messages. It’s essentially a super cheap iPhone stylus pen.

The key to using these snack sausages is to leave the wrapper intact. However, that doesn’t mean that any unwrapped sausage can be used as an iPhone stylus.

While speaking to iPhoneSavior, America iPhone developer Elam Nikserof confirmed this fact, saying, “Nothing has worked while keeping the wrapper on like the Korean meat stylus.” Apparently there’s something special about Korean sausages. He added, “I’m looking into importing the sausage as an exclusive U.S. carrier.”

Turns out that Evan is too late, though, as Case Crown, a US-based company dedicated to producing the “best quality carrying” solutions for mobile devices, is now offering iPhone sausage styluses to American users for just $.99 per pop.

Anyone care for a sausage? Just make sure you don’t use it while inebriated, because you might just accidentally end up eating it in a rage of hunger!

What Went Right?

At one time or another, any self-help author worth his or her weight in pulp is going to advise readers to analyze "what went wrong." In other words, how did you get yourself into whatever predicament that caused you to seek advice? Only by understanding what went wrong, these authors advise, can you make appropriate changes to your life.

This approach makes a big bunch of sense. After all, past behavior predicts future behavior. So, if you don't understand what actions got you into trouble you'll be likely to repeat them. And the trouble will continue.

Indeed, "post mortems" are a big part of life nowadays. If a policy, building, movie, blog (what have you) doesn't work out, folks want to figure out what went wrong. I applaud this kind of analysis. Great idea.

Yet, sometimes, just sometimes, things go right. When things go right we are, of course, happy. Also, we feel the need to get on with the next thing. We want to focus on what's not working and fix that.

I suggest, though, that reflecting on what went right is just as important as determining what went wrong. Here's a great question, called a counterfactual by us social psychologists: How could things have turned out differently? How might you have failed? Kind of strange to think that way. But productive.

For example, if you didn't blurt out an inappropriate comment at last night's party, reflect on why. What if you'd had more to drink? What if you hadn't been so other-focused? What if you hadn't caught "the look" from your partner?

Reflecting on what went right, by the way, will give a moment or two to bask in your own glory and to celebrate your achievement. Not a bad thing, methinks.

Bullet bounces off US woman's bra

A US woman had a lucky escape when a burglar's bullet bounced off the metal underwire in her bra.

Police in the city of Detroit said one of three intruders fired a shot when the woman looked out of her window and saw them raiding the house next door.

The bullet smashed the window and hit her, but instead of causing serious injury - or worse - it was deflected off the wiring in her bra.

The unnamed 57-year-old woman was taken to hospital and released the same day.

"It did slow the bullet down," said a police spokesman. "She sustained injuries but they're not life-threatening."

Teenage gang

The woman, who lives on the west side of Detroit, had seen the youths breaking into the house next door while her neighbour was away.

Police believe one of the gang saw her looking out of the window and fired at her.

The suspects then drove away after the shooting.

Sgt Eren Stephens Bell told the Detroit News: "We need to get some bulletproof vests made from that. It is some strong wire."

7 (Thankfully) Extinct Giant Versions of Modern Animals

The animal kingdom is loaded with some pretty formidable creatures, a few of which we as humans are only barely able to keep in line even with modern technology. As it turns out, many of these species are the diminutive descendents of giants so mind bogglingly huge and terrifying that they could probably take over the entire world with minimal effort.

#7. Meganeura, The Giant Dragonfly

Meganeura were enormous dragonfly-like insects with wingspans the length of an average toddler, making them among the largest flying predatory insects in the history of the world. Their diet consisted mainly of other insects, small amphibians and the dreams of children.

Some scientists think that Meganeura were actually too big to be able to survive in the current atmosphere, citing the higher oxygen concentration in the prehistoric world as the only way an insect its size would be able to breathe in enough to support its massive body. By all accounts, this makes Meganeura one of the biggest bullets ever dodged by the human race, because if one of them collided with a bug zapper the resulting inferno would probably burn down your entire backyard.

#6. Jaekelopterus rhenaniae, The Giant Sea Scorpion

"Giant scorpion" was all this thing needed in its name to be pretty terrifying. Jaekelopterus rhenaniae, the largest bug on record, managed to up the ante by being an ancient giant scorpion from beneath the waves. It may just be us, but that makes it way worse somehow.

Particularly if you picture it swimming up and pinching your scrotum.

Jaekelopterus lived in freshwater lakes and streams, unleashing all eight-feet of its anthropodic rage on unsuspecting victims. Though referred to as a sea scorpion, it was really more of an oversized lobster, a fact which does nothing to decrease its hideousness. Or its claws, which were the size of a grown man's head.

Did we mention the claws? Because we cannot stress those enough.

Why it's a Good Thing They're Dead:

We already depend on fresh water as an alternative to swimming in the ocean, because rivers tend to be relatively free of massive lurking predators. Having six or seven prehistoric death lobsters crawling around in the silt would seriously affect the "wow" factor of that weekend at your uncle's lake house. Also, the amount of food a scavenging beast like Jaekelopterus would need to consume would reduce fishing trips to a level of boredom the human mind can barely comprehend.

#5. Argentavis magnificens, The Giant Bird

We as humans are already pretty envious of birds--they can fly around and shit on anything they want, something we'd need both a jetpack and precision diarrhea to accomplish.

As if answering the dare to make us feel more inadequate, the world gave us Argentavis magnificens, the largest flying bird in recorded history. These beasts possessed a wingspan between 19- and 26-feet, and a wing area of 75-feet, which you may notice is only slightly smaller than a Lear Jet. In addition to its staggering size and 240-pound weight, the bird is believed to have swallowed prey as large as cattle in one fell swoop.

It is important to note that cattle are larger than humans.

Why it's a Good Thing They're Dead:

Backyards would not be fenced. They'd be caged. Blue skies wouldn't be a beacon of hope so much as a grim reminder of your own mortality. Say good bye to bicycles, convertibles, outdoor sporting events. When birds the size of a Volkswagen are patrolling the skies, anything that doesn't involve a sky-raptor resistant roof over your head officially falls under the category of "not worth it!" Half of the Gross National Product would need to be devoted to the construction of giant scarecrows, which depending on how gullible they were, would only work on the birds who'd seen Voltron.

#4. Arctodus simus, The Giant Bear

To be perfectly honest, few things could kick as much ass as a gargantuan prehistoric bear.

Arctodus simus, the giant short-faced bear, succeeded in being both gargantuan and prehistoric. Standing 12-feet tall on its hind legs and weighing over a ton, this bear probably could've ripped the face off of every land animal currently in existence without too much trouble. Most experts believe that hunting had a lot to do with Arctodus' extinction, either by being hunted directly or having their food supply depleted by early man.

You can totally buy a giant bear skeleton for your home at this place.

Why it's a Good Thing They're Dead:

Like most extinct mammals from the Ice Age, Arctodus competed pretty heavily with human beings for the same natural resources (food and water). We really only came out on top because we figured out how to make weapons first, so if these bears were still hanging around, it's entirely possible we'd still be competing with them, only instead of trout and berries it would be for waterfront property and lucrative employment opportunities.

Also, it could knock your head off with one blow, and who needs that kind of stress.

#3. Josephoartigasia monesi, The Giant Rodent

Josephoartigasia monesi, the largest rodent ever discovered, was roughly the size of a hippopotamus and every bit as adorable. These beasts were five-feet high, 10-feet long and likely weighed over a ton--large enough to have towed Cinderella to her prom without any of that "bibbidy-bobbidy" bullshit.

Their mouths packed incisors that were over a foot long, and though their diet was most likely vegetarian, teeth that size could easily deliver a bite worse than Christian Slater in a nightclub.

Why it's a Good Thing They're Dead:

Rodents are fairly irritating pests as it is, so imagine the damage one the size of a pygmy elephant could do to the community. The amount of vegetation (and cheese) necessary to sustain a monsei for just one day would probably be more than an entire family of people eat in a week, and considering the rate at which rats reproduce, thinning out the ranks of a whole oversized colony would become part of your daily routine just to keep from starving to death.

#2. Carcharodon/Carcharocles megalodon, The Giant Shark

The largest fish in the ocean today (that we know about) is the whale shark, and while the name is certainly impressive, the animal itself is more like the Fat Albert of the sea, benevolently swimming along and wrecking havoc on precisely nothing it encounters.

Much more impressive was Carcharodon megalodon, the largest fish in history and the star of more made-for-cable movies than Lorenzo Lamas and Casper Van Dien combined. At 70-feet long, this magnificent bastard was more than three times the size of an average great white shark and large enough to swallow an average sedan.

Why it's a Good Thing They're Dead:

We shouldn't really have to explain this. Between great whites, moray eels and 160-foot long Voltron-jellyfish already in the ocean, it's scary enough to go swimming without a beast from the Old Testament sniffing around for your blood.

#1. Titanoboa cerrejonensis, The Giant Snake

The largest anaconda on record stretches a considerable 27-feet at its proudest moments.

However, its ancestor Titanoboa cerrejonensis (yes, it is actually called the Titanoboa) grew to lengths anywhere between 40- and 50-feet, weighed in at two and a half thousand pounds, and could probably crush you to death with a harsh glance. Without dispute, it is the most ass-blastingly enormous snake that has ever existed.

Check your ass, because it has likely just been blasted.

The Titanoboa lived about 60 million years ago and actually survived the extinction event that killed all the dinosaurs, effectively curling up its tail and smacking natural selection directly in the testicles, staving off death for several more millennia.

Why it's a Good Thing They're Dead:

Despite the unmitigated supervillain awesomeness of its name, the Titanboa could probably eat the entire student body of an elementary school in an afternoon, which could be seriously damaging to the future of the fast food industry. On the plus side, the careers of Casper Van Dien and Lorenzo Lamas would create enough tax revenue to end world hunger.

Student’s English assignment shuts down school in northeastern B.C.

EDMONTON — Calm has returned to a northeastern B.C. school after a police investigation revealed that an alarming letter posted throughout the school was actually a student’s English assignment.

Classes were cancelled at North Peace Senior Secondary School in Fort St. John on Friday, after a staff member found a suspicious letter posted throughout the school the evening before. The letter “spoke of the end of the world and the writer acquiring a fully automatic firearm to better defend himself from threats in a post-apocalyptic world,” RCMP said.

Rumours quickly spread through online social-media sites about the letter’s intent, and concerns were reported to staff and police.

“Because the story involved a firearm and had some violence in it, and was posted out of context ... there was some concern that it might relate to some intention toward the school,” said Lesley Lahaye, assistant superintendent of the Peace River North school district. “We just felt that there was a small margin of risk, but any measure of risk ... justified the response.”

With the school empty, Fort St. John RCMP joined staff and school district personnel is investigating the letter. They discovered its author, proud of his work, had posted it for display throughout the school without explaining its nature.

Lahaye said staff will be reviewing guidelines for posting material in the school since the incident, adding they’d learned a lot about the power of online social networking.

“It’s been an interesting learning experience for us about how social media works, and how easy it is for rumours to spread far and wide,” she said.

Demise of coral, salamander show impact of Web

DOHA, Qatar – The Internet has emerged as one of the greatest threats to rare species, fueling the illegal wildlife trade and making it easier to buy everything from live baby lions to wine made from tiger bones, conservationists and law enforcement officers said Sunday.

The Web's impact was made clear at the meeting of the 175-nation Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, or CITES. Delegates voted overwhelmingly Sunday to ban the trade of the Kaiser's spotted newt, which the World Wildlife Fund says has been devastated by the Internet trade.

A proposal from the United States and Sweden to regulate the trade in red and pink coral — which is crafted into expensive jewelry and sold extensively on the Web — was defeated. Delegates voted the idea down mostly over concerns the increased regulations might impact poor fishing communities.

Trade on the Web poses "one of the biggest challenges facing CITES," said Paul Todd, a campaign manager for the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

"The Internet is becoming the dominant factor overall in the global trade in protected species," he said. "There will come a time when country to country trade of large shipments between big buyers and big sellers in different countries is a thing of the past."

The IFAW has done several surveys of illegal trade on the Web and a three-month survey in 2008 found more than 7,000 species worth $3.8 million sold on auction sites, classified ads and chat rooms, mostly in the United States but also Europe, China, Russia and Australia. Most of what is traded is illegal African ivory but the group has also found exotic birds along with rare products such as tiger-bone wine and pelts from protected species like polar bears and leopards.

A separate 2009 survey by the group Campaign Against the Cruelty to Animals targeted the Internet trade in Ecuador, finding offers to sell live capuchin monkeys, lion cubs and ocelots.

"As the Internet knows no borders, it causes several new problems regarding the enforcement of the protection of endangered species," the group said in its report.

John Sellar, CITES' chief law enforcement officer, argued the impact of the Web was overblown and that many species that appear illegal may in fact may be legal. He also said many big traders were reluctant to use the Internet, since payments can be traced and they can be ensnared in undercover operations.

"There seems to be little evidence that there are commercial operations using the Internet," Sellar said. "Although the risks may be small depending on which country you are living in, you can be identified when using the Internet. So there are clearly risks there."

Still, a CITES committee endorsed an e-commerce proposal Sunday that calls on governments to draft measures to address the Internet trade and law enforcement agencies to dedicate a unit to focus on it.
The private sector has also moved to limit the illegal trade.

EBay, which was singled out in the IFAW survey as being a main source of much of the ivory sales, said in a statement that it instituted a complete ban on the ivory trade in 2008, which activists said has helped slow the trade in tusks on the Web.

The newt is a textbook example of what can happen to one species through trade on the Web. According to a study by the WWF, the black and brown salamander with white spots is coveted in the pet trade. They number only around 1,000 and live in Iran's Zagros Mountains. About 200 have been traded annually over the years, mostly through a Web site operated out of Ukraine. Their population has fallen 80 percent.

"The Internet itself isn't the threat, but it's another way to market the product," said Ernie Cooper, who spearhead the investigation into the newt for TRAFFIC Canada. "Most people are not willing to pay $300 for a salamander. But through the power of the Internet, tapping into the global market, you can find buyers."

The red and pink coral, which consist of 32 species, are harvested in deep Mediterranean waters and turned into expensive jewelry either in Italy or cheaper place like Taiwan and China, according to the marine conservation group SeaWeb.

It is the most widely traded and valuable of all precious corals but has no international protection, resulting in a brisk international trade in the species, the group said.

Opposition to the coral proposal was led by Japan, which also successfully spearheaded efforts last week to defeat a proposed ban on the international export of Atlantic bluefin tuna, a key ingredient in sushi.

They were joined by several coastal states including Indonesia, Malaysia and Iceland, all of whom argued the corals are crucial to the survival of local communities and are not overharvested.

Meanwhile, delegates approved a voluntary conservation plan for endangered tigers that calls for tougher legislation in countries home to the big cats to tackle widespread smuggling and boost money spent on law enforcement.

The British plan also calls for countries to better control tiger farms and to phase out traditional medicine markets which fuel demand for tiger parts. The proposal includes no funding for the 13 tiger range countries, only a request for donor assistance.

The Tiger population has plummeted because of human encroachment, the loss of nine-tenths of their habitat and poaching to supply the illegal trade. Their numbers have fallen from 100,000 at the beginning of the 20th century to around 3,600 today.

Dad's Blessings

A young man was getting ready to graduate college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.

As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautifully wrapped gift box.

Curious, but somewhat disappointed the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible. Angrily, he raised his voice at his father and said, "With all your money you give me a Bible?" and stormed out of the house, leaving the holy book.

Many years passed and the young man was very successful in his business. He had a beautiful home and wonderful family, but realized his father was very old, and thought perhaps he should go to him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care things. When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart.

He began to search his father's important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. As he read those words, a car key dropped from an envelope taped behind the Bible. It had a tag with the dealer's name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words... PAID IN FULL.

How many times do we miss God's blessings because they are not packaged as we expected?

Two wealthy ladies were chatting while having high tea one day when one of them said to the other one "You know ah, my maid is very stupid leh…You don’t believe? Let me show you."
She then called her maid, Ah Sui over and said "Ah Sui, here is a 10 dollar note, go to the shopping centre and buy me a diamond necklace." to which Ah Sui replied, "Yes Mam! right away!" and rushed off to the shopping centre.
The rich lady turned to her friend while the other rich lady said, "That's nothing, you want to see stupid, I will show you stupid." and she called her maid, Fatimah. "Fatimah, go home now and check to see if I'm at home." to which Fatimah said, "Yes Madam, right away Madam." and ran home.
Later on, the two maids met on the road. Ah Sui said to Fatimah, "Eh, you know my Mam is sooo stupid. She gave me 10 dollars and ask me to go to the shopping centre and buy her a diamond necklace... Doesn't she know that today is a public holiday, the shopping centre is closed!"
Fatimah replied, "You think she is stupid ah? My Madam is worse, she asked me to go home to check if she is at home... She got handphone what, can just call up to check lah!

How to be Annoying in the Computer Lab

Log on, wait a sec, then get a frightened look on your face and scream, "Oh my God! They've found me!" and bolt.

Laugh uncontrollably for about 3 minutes and then suddenly stop and look suspiciously at everyone who looks at you.

Type frantically, often stopping to look at the person next to you evilly.

Make a small ritual sacrifice to the computer before you turn it on.

Bring a chainsaw, but don't use it. If anyone asks why you have it, say, "Just in case..." mysteriously.

Every time you press return and there is processing time required, pray, "Ohpleaseohpleaseohpleaseohpleaseohplease," and scream "YES!" when it finishes.

If you're sitting in a swivel chair, spin around singing "The Thong Song" whenever there is processing time required.

Draw a picture of a man on a piece of paper and tape it to your monitor. Try to seduce it. Act like it hates you and then complain loudly that men are worthless.

When you start up a PC, ask loudly where the smiling Apple face is.

Sit and stare at the screen, chomping on your nails. After doing this for a while, spit them out at the feet of the person next to you.

Take the keyboard and sit on it. Type like this. Then go and complain about the bad working conditions.

Laugh hysterically, shout "You will all perish in a great flood" and continue working.

Bring some dry ice and make it look like the computer is smoking.

When doing calculations, pull out an abacus and say that sometimes the old ways are best.

Pull out a pencil. Start writing on the screen. Complain that the lead doesn't work.

Run into the computer lab, shout, "The Apocalypse is here!" then calmly sit down and begin to type.

The Burned Ears
A guy burned both of his ears... so they were asking him at the hospital how it happened.
He said, ''I was ironing my clothing and the phone rang... So, instead of the phone I picked up the iron and burned my ear...''
''But how the heck did you burn the other ear?'' The doctor asked.
''They called back.''

Dear Mrs Goh

The Good Lord was creating teachers. It was His sixth day of 'overtime' and He knew that this was a tremendous responsibility for teachers would touch the lives of so many impressionable young children. An angel appeared to Him and said, "You are taking a long time to figure this one out."

"Yes," said the Lord, " but have you read the specs on this order?"

TEACHER

must stand above all students, yet be on their level

must be able to do 180 things not connected with the subject being taught

must communicate vital knowledge to all students daily and be right most of the time

must have more time for others than for herself/himself

must have a smile that can endure through pay cuts, problematic children, and worried parents

must go on teaching when parents question every move and others are not supportive

must have 6 pair of hands.

"Six pair of hands, " said the angel, "that's impossible"

"Well, " said the Lord, " it is not the hands that are the problem. It is the three pairs of eyes that are presenting the most difficulty!"
The angel looked incredulous, " Three pairs of eyes...on a standard model?"
The Lord nodded His head, " One pair can see a student for what he is and not what others have labeled him as. Another pair of eyes is in the back of the teacher's head to see what should not be seen, but what must be known. The eyes in the front are only to look at the child as he/she 'acts out' in order to reflect, " I understand and I still believe in you", without so much as saying a word to the child."
"Lord, " said the angel, " this is a very large project and I think you should work on it tomorrow".
"I can't," said the Lord, " for I have come very close to creating something much like Myself. I have one that comes to work when he/she is sick.....teaches a class of children that do not want to learn....has a special place in his/her heart for children who are not his/her own.....understands the struggles of those who have difficulty....never takes the students for granted..."
The angel looked closely at the model the Lord was creating.

"It is too soft-hearted, " said the angel.
"Yes," said the Lord, " but also tough. You can not imagine what this teacher can endure or do, if necessary".
"Can this teacher think?" asked the angel.
"Not only think," said the Lord,. "but reason and compromise."
The angel came closer to have a better look at the model and ran his finger over the teacher's cheek.
"Well, Lord, " said the angel, your job looks fine but there is a leak. I told you that you were putting too much into this model. You can not imagine the stress that will be placed upon the teacher."
The Lord moved in closer and lifted the drop of moisture from the teacher's cheek. It shone and glistened in the light.
"It is not a leak," He said, "It is a tear."
"A tear? What is that?" asked the angel, "What is a tear for?"
The Lord replied with great thought, " It is for the joy and pride of seeing a child accomplish even the smallest task. It is for the loneliness of children who have a hard time to fit in and it is for compassion for the feelings of their parents. It comes from the pain of not being able to reach some children and the disappointment those children feel in themselves. It comes often when a teacher has been with a class for a year and must say good-bye to those students and get ready to welcome a new class."
"My, " said the angel, " The tear thing is a great idea... You are a genius!"
The Lord looked somber, "I didn't put it there."
